A CARIS standard geodetic string has the form dd-mm-ss.sssH for a latitude and ddd-mm-ss.sssH for a longitude, where:

- dd - represents a number between 0 and 90, inclusive
- ddd - represents a number between 0 and 180, inclusive
- mm - represents a number between 0 and 59, inclusive
- ss.sss - represents a number between 0.000 and 59.999, inclusive
- H - is the hemisphere designation. It will be either N or S for
latitudes where
*value*is positive or negative, respectively. It will be either E or W or longitudes where*value*is positive or negative, respectively.
